The Merthyr Spitfire
 
 

Merthyr Tydfil, like many other towns in the UK, collected funds to contribute to the War effort. In 1942, Merthyr Tydfil contributed £5,000 for a Spitfire, to be named 'Merthyr Tydfil Borough'.
