Christ Church Cyfarthfa
In 1844 the
Rector of Merthyr J C Campbell wrote a letter to the Church
Commission asking for their help ‘to relieve the spiritual
destitution’ of the Cyfarthfa area. In December 1845 a plan to
build a new church was approved. With the aid of several
donations, the church which was designed by Mr James Bennett,
surveyor to the Merthyr Board of Health, was finally finished in
1857 at a cost of £2,677, and Rev John Howells was installed as
the first vicar.
