Dowlais Central Station

Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil.

Dowlais Central Station

Originally named Dowlais Lloyd Street Station by the Brecon & Merthyr Railway, and locally known as Dowlais Tip Station. It  was closed to passengers in 1960. (These were workmens trains that ran all the way to------PANT! This station became the Dowlais Leisure Centre and is now a visitor centre funded by Stephens & George Charitable Trust

(2015).

Dowlais Central Station on the 13th of September 1951.

In the background is the Ifor Works  Foundry of Guest Keen, which was closed in 1987 after 200 years of iron making.

Steve Griffiths tells us: "This is a rare and historically important shot showing the original B&MR engine shed, which was destroyed in a fire (c. 1925?) and was replaced with a smaller, simpler GWR standard pattern one-road shed."
