Merthyr Motor Club |
|
|
On February 7 1926,
three motorcycling enthusiasts, namely Harry Freeman, George
Roblings and Ivor Lewis attended the East South Wales Centre
meeting at the Central Hotel in Pontypridd and succeeded in
having Merthyr accepted as an official club within the Auto
Cycling Union, the ruling organisation based in Pall Mall,
London. |

|
Initially, club meetings were held at the Imperial Hotel,
Pontmorlais, and then in 1945. a permanent headquarters was
provided by Mr Ludi Pallas within his business premises,
situated by the side of the Corporation bus garage in Penry
Street, Georgetown. |

The club quickly established a reputation for organising top
class motorcycling sporting events, with summer scrambles, and
winter trials attracting competitors from all over the country. |
|

|

|
The highlight of the year was the annual presentation dinner
which was under the domain of the ladies section, and they
ensured that the splendid evening reflected the stature that was
now accorded the club, far and wide. |

|
|
|
|
Recognition of the
clubs glowing reputation was officially confirmed when the
renowned national Mitchell Trial was allocated to Merthyr on
December 2 1945, and then the Council willingly sanctioned the
incorporation of the Boroughs official crest on the membership
badge and stationary logo, at the dinner held at the Mackintosh
Hotel in Aberfan in 1956. |

In 1964, as part of
the regeneration of the area, the fond remembered club house was
demolished for the present Fire Station to be built, Since then,
no acceptable suitable alternative has ever been secured.
In order to survive,
club meetings have regularly taken place hi various local pubs,
and by a quirk of time, present day enthusiasts now congregate
back in the historic Imperial, usually referred to as the Tiger. |

Hopefully through fortitude and dedication the clubs long and
proud tradition will be celebrated in a grand manner sometime in
2026.
