Stephen Owen Davies (S O) was born in 1886 in Abercwmboi he started working in the coal mines at 11 years of age, he later became (1918-1934) the South Wales Miners' Federation (SWMF) Miners' Agent  and (1924 1930) a member of the SWMF Executive Committee . He eventually (1924-1933) became the Vice-President of the SWMF.

 

In 1934 he became  MP for Merthyr Tydfil and held it continuously until

his death in 1972 for the Labour Party 1934-1970 and the Independant Labour Party 1970-1972.

 

He was a member of Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council 1931-1949 and Mayor 1945-1946
